Starting with the motto, “A sound mind lies in a sound body,” Rawshan Jahan Eastern Medical College and Hospital (Unani) was established at Laxmipur in 2008. The College continues its endeavor with a strong mission and vision of higher education in the Eastern System of Medicine, particularly in Unani.
Origin
Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan established the College for the greater purpose of humanity in Laxmipur, located in the southern part of Bangladesh on the riverbank of Meghna.
He realized that the people of this area suffered from poverty, superstition, illiteracy, and inadequate healthcare, with modern medical services being beyond the reach of common people.
To improve their condition, he envisioned a combined medical support system integrating Allopathic, Unani, and Ayurvedic medicine. From this noble vision, he decided to establish a Unani Medical College and Hospital in his native area — aiming to raise awareness of Unani Medical Science and make healthcare accessible at a minimum cost for the common and needy people.
Dr. Harun purchased lands for the College and Hospital with his own funds and began construction work.
As per the Private Unani & Ayurvedic Medical College Settlement Rule 2012, it was necessary to establish a 30-bedded hospital along with the College. Thus, he took the initiative to construct a separate hospital building beside the College.
The College and Hospital buildings were inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner and Police Super of Laxmipur on 20 February 2008. The construction work of the Hospital building is currently in progress.
About the College
The College is located in a natural environment in South Maguri village, Dattapara, Laxmipur. The Founder envisioned a campus close to nature so that both teachers and students could engage in their academic and research activities in a healthy and peaceful setting.
The College is about 15 kilometers away from Laxmipur City Center, with good transportation and communication facilities, allowing students to easily commute to the campus.
The College received government permission to start the DUMS program under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 on 14 October 2008. The Board of Unani and Ayurvedic Systems of Medicine recognized and permitted the College to conduct academic activities and student enrollment as per the Unani and Ayurvedic Practitioners Ordinance 1983.
Rawshan Jahan Eastern Medical College and Hospital (Unani) began its academic journey in the 2008–2009 Session with 115 students in the Diploma in Unani Medicine & Surgery (DUMS) program.
It was the first institution in Bangladesh to receive permission to offer the Undergraduate Program (BUMS) as a private institution.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the College to start this program on 22 December 2016.
As per government regulations, the College had to be affiliated with a public university. Accordingly, the College took steps to affiliate with the University of Chittagong, which recognized the program under its Medical Faculty and allowed it to begin academic operations.
Later, with the establishment of Chittagong Medical University (CMU), the affiliation was transferred from the University of Chittagong to CMU in 2018.
Since then, Rawshan Jahan Eastern Medical College and Hospital (Unani) has been offering the Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) program from the 2017–2018 Session.
