Hamdard Foundation Bangladesh

Origin

Hamdard Bangladesh has always been committed to ensuring quality healthcare for all citizens, regardless of their social, cultural, or religious background. The Founder of Hakim Said Eastern Medical College & Hospital, Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan, has devoted his life to the development and promotion of Unani Medicine across Bangladesh, making it accessible to the general population.

With a vision to produce skilled and knowledgeable physicians in the field of Unani Medicine, Dr. Harun observed that while many countries in the subcontinent have established several institutions for the advancement of natural and Unani medicine, Bangladesh still had very few, and public awareness about this traditional system remained limited.

To fulfill this vision, he decided to establish a college named after Shaheed Hakim Mohammad Said — a world-renowned Unani scientist, researcher, and pioneer of Unani Medical Science. Inspired by the legacy of Hamdard’s founders, Dr. Harun founded this college to continue their noble mission.

The college was initially planned to be established in Rupnagar, Mirpur. However, due to the absence of suitable infrastructure at that time, academic activities began in a rented building at Nimtoli, Dhaka, in 2008. From the very beginning, the college was committed to providing quality education in Unani Medical Science at an affordable cost for students residing in Dhaka City.

About the College

Hakim Said Eastern Medical College & Hospital received government permission to start its Diploma in Unani Medicine & Surgery (DUMS) program under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 on 15 August 2007. The Board of Unani and Ayurvedic Systems of Medicine recognized and authorized the college to conduct academic activities and student enrollment under the Unani and Ayurvedic Practitioners Ordinance of 1983.

The college commenced its first academic session in 2008–2009 with 50 students. Today, the college is located at 99, Bir Uttam C.R. Datta Road, in the heart of Dhaka City—just 400 yards from Hotel Sonargaon. This central location ensures easy access for students from all parts of Dhaka.
