Outdoor Medical Service in Unani Colleges & Hospitals
The Secretary General of Hamdard Foundation Bangladesh and the Founder of the Unani Medical Colleges Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan thought to expand free medical services to the poor and helpless people. He was aiming to provide health supports to the people who cannot really reach a doctor and unable to buy medicine from general pharmacy. He extended support for free medical treatment to the helpless people in the Hospitals of the Unani Medical Colleges and Hamdard General Hospital from Hamdard Foundation Bangladesh. A donation of huge quantity of medicine has been provided to the Outdoor Patients Department (OPD) of three Unani Medical Colleges & Hospitals and Hamdard General Hospital every month. Average 6,000 to 7,000 patients are getting benefit from this service every month.
Bishwa Ijtema
Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harurn Bhuiyan had invested his thoughts and energies to develop newer concepts of humanitarian activities in religious gathering. Hamdard Bangladesh has been providing free medical camps at Bishwa Ijtema, Tongi for 4 decades at the instruction of Dr. Harun. Every year, people from different countries of the world and various places of Bangladesh come to attend the second largest gathering of Muslim Ummah. So, Dr. Harun thinks, offering free medical treatment to this huge gathering is a unique dimension of Philanthropy. Following this trend, some other organizations also have started the same philanthropic activities in the Ijtema.
Dr. Harun started the activities on 1983. Thinking about the mass gathering of the people of different ages, countries, and divisions coming to participate the Ijtema, he decided to offer primary health care medicine to the people. Sometimes, the people came with a variety of diseases, so it was mandatory to assign a good number of practitioners of Hamdard in the program. At the beginning, only male patients were visiting the camp as per rules of Ijtema, but the female patients from surrounding area also started coming to the medical camp for the last few years. The free medical camp of Hamdard has made the organization well known in different corners of the country. The medical service is extended from 7 AM to 11 PM by 60 practitioners from 3 Unani Medical Colleges & Hospitals as well as Hamdard Institute of Unani and Ayurvedic Medicine. The Hakims and Kabirajes remain standby for any kind of emergency support. Considering the huge number of patients, the practitioners have to offer treatment to the patients standing in 4 to 6 lines. In the latest Ijtema held in 2023, Hamdard Bangladesh provided health support to around 2, 50,000 (two lac and fifty thousand) Mussallies
Hajji Camp
Hajj is the highest gathering of Muslim Ummah to perform the fourth religious foundation of Islam. Every year, a huge number of people register for Hajj from Bangladesh. As per the procedure, they have to stay in the Government Hajj Camp at Ashkona, Dhaka before departure to Mecca or Madina. Dr. Harun has realized that there are some common diseases and syndromes among the Hajj pilgrims in Macca and Madina due to the change of weather, environment, and food habit. They suffer from Cough, Fever, Common Cold, Dehydration, Constipation, and Dysentery while performing Hajj. So, he thought of arranging a free medical camp for the Hajj pilgrims at Hajj Camp providing primary medical support before their departure. In addition, he thought of catering a package of medicine for common diseases, and handed over to them for emergency use during Hajj.
Hamdard Bangladesh has been arranging a month long free medical camp in Hajj Camp from 2011 at Ashkona near Dhaka Airport. Hamdard Bangladesh is the pioneer of such philanthropic activities for the Hajj pilgrims in Dhaka. A group of experienced and professional Practitioners of Hamdard provide 12 hours (8.00 AM to 8.00 PM) free medical treatment (advice and medicine) to the Mussallies. A complete set of 6-8 items of elementary medicine is given to the pilgrims to use as first aid medicine while performing Hajj. Hamdard Foundation also thought of making an easy guide book for Hajj pilgrims describing the sequence of actions, do’s & don’ts and absolute required duas for holy Hajj. Besides that, patients with other diseases also get treatment in this camp. The Practitioners from Hakim Said Eastern Medical College & Hospital and Hamdard Institute of Unani and Ayurvedic Medicine extend their services for this month long free medical camp.
Hamdard Bangladesh provided medical support to nearly 40,000 (forty thousand) pilgrims in 2023. A free medicine package (6-8 items of first aid medicine in a bag) was provided to each of nearly 25,000 (twenty five thousand) Musallies before their departure
Durga Puja
Every charitable act is a stepping stone towards heaven, thinks Dr. Harun. Hamdard Foundation thought of extending health support and a free medical camp during the religious festival of Hindus in Bangladesh. It was for the first time, the Foundation organized a free medical camp during Durga Puja at Paikpara Puja Mandap in 2014.
There was also a setup of serving free Rooh Afza to the followers of traditional religion (Sonatan Dharma). On the request of Puja Committee from Paikpara, Mirpur-1, the free medical camp had been continuing its function every year till 2018. Average 3,500-4,000 worshippers (vakta) were served with free treatment and medicine every year. Hamdard Foundation was requested to arrange free medical camp at Ramna Kali Mandir in the University of Dhaka Campus. This is one of the very old, renowned and historical Puja Mandap. The free medical camp at Ramna Kali Mandir was inaugurated by the Honorable Member of Parliament Aroma Datta, MP in 2019. The Hakims and Kabirajes from Hakim Said Eastern Medical College & Hospital and Hamdard Institute of Unani and Ayurvedic Medicine extended their services for that free medical camp. Nearly 12,000 worshippers (vakta) received medical support during the occasion.
Kathin Chibar Dan
Goutam Buddha said, “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness will never be decreased by being shared”. Hamdard Foundation conceived the idea and depth of this statement. Hamdard believe that there is no boundary in humanity. Hamdard Foundation has become pioneer to arrange free medical camp in the “Kathin Chibar Dan” festival of Buddhists. A free blood grouping and medical camp was organized in Sobujbag Dharmarajik Bouddha Mohabihar and Mirpur Shakkomuni Bouddha Bihar in 2019. The free Rooh Afza serving program was also arranged beside the free medical camp. The Honorable Chairman of Bonoful Adibashi Foundation Ven: Proggyananda Mohathero inaugurated the camp. Nearly 3,000 worshippers received free medical support during the occasion.
