Hamdard Foundation Bangladesh

Starting with the motto, ‘Building a Healthier Nation’, Hamdard Unani Medical College and Hospital (HUMCH) was established in Bogura in 1990. It is one of the pioneer institutes in the field of Unani Systems of Medicine in Bangladesh, dedicated to teaching, training, and research across various disciplines. The college continues its mission of promoting higher education in Eastern Medicine, particularly the Unani System of Medicine.

Origin

Being far from the capital, North Bengal often lacked access to modern medical care. Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan observed that the people in this region were suffering due to poverty, superstition, illiteracy, and inadequate healthcare. To address this, he envisioned parallel development in both business and healthcare sectors in northern Bangladesh. His goal was to make people aware of Unani Medical Science and provide affordable medical treatment to the common and needy.

Dr. Bhuiyan chose Bogura as the gateway to the Northern Belt of Bangladesh to expand Unani education. Thus, in 1990, he founded the Bogura Unani Medical College and Hospital. Initially, the college operated from a rented building in Sultanganj, Goalgari, Bogura, until 2001. Later, in 2005, it was renamed as Hamdard Unani Medical College and Hospital.

The Founder acquired 95.25 decimals of land beside the Dhaka–Bogura highway near Banani for the permanent campus. Construction began in 2011, and after completing up to the second floor, the college shifted to its new campus. The 30-bedded hospital was also established within the same building. The permanent campus was inaugurated by Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan on 28 April 2013. Today, the campus stands proudly on 33 bighas of land.

Location and Affiliation

The college is beautifully located beside the Dhaka–Bogura highway, with the serene River Korotoa flowing on its eastern side. The Founder envisioned a campus close to nature, fostering a peaceful and healthy environment for learning and research. Its central location within the city allows easy access for local people seeking healthcare services.

Hamdard Unani Medical College and Hospital received permission from the Government of Bangladesh in 1990 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 to start its diploma program. The Board of Unani and Ayurvedic Systems of Medicine recognized and authorized the college to conduct academic activities as per the Unani and Ayurvedic Practitioners Ordinance, 1983. The first academic session of Diploma in Unani Medicine & Surgery (DUMS) began in 1990–1991.

In 2016, the college made history by becoming the first private institution in Bangladesh to receive approval from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to offer a Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery (BUMS) program. After affiliation with Rajshahi Medical University (RMU) in 2017, HUMCH officially launched the BUMS program in the 2017–2018 session with its first batch of 12 students.
